On Monday, the US Office of Personnel Management issued a memorandum to the heads of federal departments and agencies, kicking off a recruiting effort called the U.S. Tech Force.

The initiative is geared towards hiring tech employees experienced in AI, cybersecurity and data science to join federal agencies, where they will work on AI-related projects and assist in modernizing technology systems.

The U.S. Tech Force will consist of annual cohorts of 1,000 Fellows who will be hired into and funded by agencies and will serve one or two year fellowships with the federal government. While the Office of Personnel Management will oversee the program, fellows will be hired and onboarded directly into each agency, with teams of about 30-40 individuals at most large agencies.

The first pilot wave of this program will be initiated by Spring 2026, with the first cohort engaged by September 2026.
