Connecticut employers: A reminder that there are amendments to the state’s paid sick leave law that will go into effect October 1, 2023. These amendments will, among other things, allow covered “service workers” to use paid sick time for “a mental health wellness day,” as well as if they are the parent of guardian of a child who is a victim of family violence or sexual assault.

These new bases for time off under the law are in addition to the existing covered reasons for use of paid sick time under the law. The amendments, which were included in a larger passage of bills, are available for review below. Companies with service workers in Connecticut should make sure to update their sick time policies to comply with these new amendments.

The term “service worker” is broadly defined under the statute to include, among other workers, retail salespersons, secretaries and administrative assistants, and data entry and information processing workers.

Make sure your HR professionals are informed and that policies are updated. Feel free to reach out with questions. For additional information, also see the text of the statute here: AN ACT CONCERNING THE MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS OF CHILDREN.
